Enlightenment

My artwork strives to communicate a sense of beauty, reconciliation, and the nature of continuity and connection. The sculptures, as a physical model of paradox, resolve a contradiction of viewpoints and are united within the context of the material : the inside is outside, the rough is smooth, the strong is fragile, and the opaque is translucent.

While creating, I evoke the psychological concept of flow, which is a state of full immersion in a focused activity that requires the utmost level of skill and concentration. In my sculpture, the flow revolves around stone and light, time and space, and ultimate balance. With its vocabulary of geometry and composition, my artwork is intended to be a poetic description of the physical realm of nature and our connection to it.

I have been a professional artist for over 40 years with studios located in Wilmington and the Village of Arden in Delaware. My primary material is stone, but my work also encompasses wood, metal, and cementitious materials. I completed a B.Ed. degree in Industrial Technology and taught for four years in the Pennsylvania school system before deciding to pursue a career in sculpture and design. Upon graduating with a MFA in Sculpture from the University of Delaware, I settled in the Wilmington area and developed a practice in public artworks, design, and community activism. My artwork is represented in corporate, public, and private collections and I have designed and installed exhibits for several museums. I teach stone carving workshops in Vermont during the summer and several of my major public artworks are listed in the Smithsonian Art Inventories Online Catalog. My studio practice in Arden produces original unique carvings in a variety of stones.
